The following are terms to familiarize yourself with and research to help you become a more effective advocate for your child.

 
Section 504 - Section 504 is a civil rights act that is part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
 
IEP -  Individualized Education Plan.
 
ED - Emotionally disturbed.
 
ODD - Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
 
Special Education (IDEA) - Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
 
RTC - Residential Treatment Center.
 
Inpatient Rehab - Drug/alcohol rehabilitation program where child stays at facility full time.
 
Outpatient Rehab - Drug/alcohol rehabilitation program that allows the child to go home each day.
 
Internet safety - Web safety, or online safety or Internet Safety, is the knowledge of maximizing the user's personal safety and security risks to private information and property associated with using the internet, and the self-protection from computer crime in general.
 
Wrap Around Services - Service provided by Mental Health Department  that provides a facilitator who works directly with your family to provide stabilization during a crisis.
Cyberbullying - is a particular form of Bullying that, unlike its traditional version, is perpetrated by online means.
 
AA - Alchoholics Anonymous.
 
Al-Anon - Support group for families and friends of individuals with alcohol and/or drug dependency.
 
Alateeen - Support group for teenagers with friends or family members with alcohol and/or drug dependency.
 
NA - Narcotics Anonymous.
 
NAMI - National Alliance on Mental Illness.
 
NCLB - No Child Left Behind.
 
FAPE- Free Appropriate Public Education
